Ghaziabad: A total of 2,379 vehicles were penalised during an intensive two-day enforcement and road safety campaign, led by the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department, for violations of the Motor Vehicles Act and traffic safety regulations, officials said on Tuesday. The Ghaziabad transport commissioner, Dr Siyaram Verma, said that over the two days, authorities initiated challan and seizure proceedings against 2,379 vehicles. “Most have been penalised for permits, fitness, tax, insurance, pollution certificates and overloading-related offences,” he said.Officials said that overspeeding and riding without helmets emerged as the most common traffic violations in the district.According to officials, the special enforcement drive was conducted across all the areas of the Ghaziabad division, including all national and state highways, major roads and other vulnerable locations, to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and transport laws.Verma said, “The campaign focused on major traffic violations, including overspeeding, drunk driving, use of mobile phones while driving, driving without helmets or seat belts, wrong-side driving, defective or illegal number plates, unauthorised parking, unauthorised passenger transport, overloaded vehicles and operation without valid permits or mandatory vehicle documents.”Officials said that the highest number of violations involved overspeeding, with action taken against 540 vehicles. “We also penalised 426 riders for not wearing helmets, 396 vehicles for unauthorised parking and 202 vehicles for displaying defective or illegal number plates,” Verma said.“Besides these, 184 motorists were booked for wrong-side driving, 180 vehicles were found with reflector-related deficiencies and 129 motorists were challaned for not wearing seat belts. Action was also taken against 85 unauthorised buses, 38 drivers caught using mobile phones while driving and 20 motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol,” officials said .Officials said proceedings for suspension of driving licences were initiated in cases where violations warranted stricter action under the Motor Vehicles Act.Verma said the department’s objective is not merely to penalise violators but also to promote road safety awareness and reduce accidents. He added that similar enforcement drives would continue in the coming days and appealed to motorists to strictly follow traffic rules and contribute towards making roads safer.
