'Dragged out of police vehicle, stabbed': Man killed for protesting eve-teasing at Jamshedpur bar; another critical

JAMSHEDPUR: A man who was critically injured after being stabbed for allegedly protesting the eve-teasing of a woman at a bar in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur died during treatment, triggering widespread protests, police said on Wednesday.According to news agency PTI, the victim, identified as Himanshu Singh, was one of two men who allegedly confronted a group over the eve-teasing of a woman at a bar in Jamshedpur’s Bistupur area on Saturday night, police said. The confrontation soon escalated into a violent clash.Upon receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and took the two men into a police vehicle, officials added.Police alleged that the accused dragged the two men out of the patrol vehicle before attacking them with knives.Himanshu Singh succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening, while the other victim remains in critical condition at Tata Main Hospital.Following the incident, an FIR was registered against 10 people, including the owner of the bar where the alleged eve-teasing took place, police said.In a statement, police said an inquiry conducted by the deputy superintendent of police, which included an examination of CCTV footage, found lapses on the part of the patrolling team.Police also suspended three personnel over alleged negligence in handling the incident.Police identified the suspended personnel as assistant sub-inspectors Ratan Kumar Das and Rajesh Kumar Ranjan, along with constable Manoj Kumar.News of Himanshu Singh’s death sparked widespread protests, with hundreds of people blocking the Bistupur roundabout and bringing traffic on one of Jamshedpur’s busiest roads to a standstill for more than six hours.Protesters accused the police of failing to act promptly and alleged that the arrest of two accused was merely an eyewash, claiming the main perpetrators were still absconding. They demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved in the attack.During the protest, demonstrators burnt tyres and allegedly vandalised the official vehicle of SP (City) Lalit Meena, shattering one of its windowpanes when the officer arrived at the site to persuade them to end the blockade.A heavy police force was deployed in and around the Bistupur roundabout to maintain law and order and prevent any further escalation.(With agency inputs)
