Trichy: Ward 23 residents in Woraiyur along with their corporation councillor have mobilized funds and cleared a temple tank managed by the HR&CE department. While residents spent around ₹50,000 to remove weeds and clean it, they urged authorities to fence the bunds and remove encroachments around the tank to create a green space with amenities. The tank of the Kasi Viswanathar temple in Gandhipuram sprawls over 16,000sqft. It was last desilted by Trichy corporation in Dec 2024. Though no sewage or wastewater is discharged into the tank, aquatic weeds grew in it possibly due to entry of water used in ritual bathing of idols, which has been stopped now.To clear the weeds, ward councillor K Suresh along with residents led by Uthra and Uma Devanathan engaged workers for a week.Residents said Trichy corporation, in 2019, proposed to develop the tank bunds with a walking track, green space, and streetlights. “Even a tender was floated for the proposal, but the project was abruptly dropped. Fencing must be erected on all sides to prevent disposal of solid waste into the tank,” Suresh said. Locals added that encroachments on one of the banks of the tank are yet to be removed.
